Did you know that when we understand the why of a story, part of us feels that the story is ours?
I’ll tell you a little more about La Peonza:
La Peonza is, for me, a trip to a dream world, a dream turned into music. Curiously, this piece was born precisely from what gives it its title, from a spinning top. My brother-in-law and friend Álvaro collects spinning tops, and one day he showed me a metal one that, when turned, emitted a very interesting, mysterious buzz that fluctuated in pitch and intensity continuously. I told him to lend it to me to record this sound in my studio. I recorded it and started “messing around” with that sound. That buzz is heard at the beginning of the piece (along with that of a spinning wooden top), and those changing tones inspired me to build the harmonic and melodic base of the piece.
From that spinning top, this musical dream begins, this dreamlike journey, with its moments of darkness, light, acceleration and rest. Everything, until reaching that magical moment in which everything stops, as if floating, and while we hear the sound of the spinning top again, the laughter of two children appear in that dream, which are the ones that, in some way, give meaning to this story: that infantile freedom, that lack of rules, that creativity in its purest form are those that lead us by the hand and those that push us to continue on that journey. The laughs, of course, are those of my two children, Cristina and Javi, when they were 1 and 3 years old.
I wrote this piece of music 11 years ago and for some reason I never made up my mind to publish it. And now its time has come, precisely because 3D sound technology, which allows us to immerse the listener in three-dimensional sound spaces, and literally “surround” the listener with the music, has added an even greater level of listening to this piece: from the start, with a spinning top that revolves around us, the music literally envelops us, and makes us feel even more inside that dream. It has been a very fun experience to play to move those sounds in three dimensions, and to simulate different unreal spaces in which this trip takes place.
Since its launch, La Peonza has brought to me many very precious gifts, in the form of anonymous comments on the “board” that is still open on my website and in which many people have told how music has made them feel. But also in the form of dance choreographies, pictures, poems, texts, and pairings to enjoy music in another way, with all the senses. Many thanks to Cristina, Patricia, Fernando, Paco, José Antonio, Inma and Álex for your contributions and for being already part of La Peonza. Here you have the links to all those contributions.
